Introduced to music from an early age


Swarakokila Sushila’s real name is Pulapaka Sushila. Born in 1935 in Vizianagaram. With the encouragement of her parents, she did a diploma in Carnatic classical music from Vizianagaram Maharaja Music College. Then she completed her music graduation in Chennai. The famous music director Pendyala Nageswara Rao organized a song competition on All India Radio for a new voice. She stood at the top of the competition.After that, in 1952, her singing career began with the movie ‘Kannathalli’ directed by Pendyala.


In the early days when Sushila entered the film industry, there was a competitive atmosphere with popular singers like P. Leela, Zikki, MS Rajeshwari, Jamuna Rani, Balasaraswathi Devi. However, with her melodious voice, Sushila rose to the top as a singer within two or three years. Sushila sang unforgettable songs under the direction of the great music directors of those days like Saluri Rajeswara Rao, KV Mahadevan, MS Viswanathan.
