Timely intervention by Guntur range IG N Sanjay and Nellore district collector Janaki prevented the simmering tensions in the district from turning into a violent situation. Tensions were simmering in Nellore town since Saturday when the district Superintendent of Police (SP) Gajrao Bhupal made certain remarks against a community. The community members took objection to the remarks and demanded action against the SP. However, when the SP was on his way to the police station to tender his apology his car was attacked by unidentified youth. In self defence, the SP’s gunman opened fire in the air and whisked away the SP to safety.
On receipt of the information, Guntur range IG N Sanjay arrived in Nellore and held discussions with police officers and also with the agitating community members. He immediately consulted with district collector Janaki to bring the situation under control and prevent escalation of the prevailing tension. Meanwhile, senior officials despatched Prakasam district SP Srikanth to review the situation. However, as action against the SP was being a go-by the agitators took to the streets again. Sensing trouble, the IG announced the suspension of inspector K Narasimha Rao besides submission of a report to the state government and the DGP regarding the SP and DSP. Mayor Abdul Aziz, IG N Sanjay and collector Janaki later participated in a peace rally along with the protestors and brought the situation under control.
