A class 12 textbook titled ‘Health and Physical Education’ authored by Dr. V K Sharma, published by New Saraswati House has come under the scrutiny of the Ministry of Human Resources Department on Thursday as the Ministry has warned to initiate action the publisher for claiming “36-24-36” as the “perfect body shape” for women. To rationalize further, the book also claimed that women contesting for beauty pageant thrones are judged on the basis of this parameter. A revised edition of the textbook was released in November 2016 where “36-24-36” was replaced with “hourglass” figure.
The CBSE board released their statement to the press where they clearly mentioned that “The reference to CBSE in this news is vehemently denied. It is totally incorrect and does not have any credible base”. They also mentioned that CBSE does not recommend its affiliated schools to use books published by any private publisher and precisely use books prescribed by it and NCERT. Anil Swarup, secretary, department of school education and literacy, MHRD tweeted that “Neither the book is approved by CBSE nor published by NCERT. Action to be taken against private publisher”.
